After what seemed like an eternity, which was only 10 days of real time, but a lifetime lived, we finally manage to get out of the NICU and head home! Clearance for this event required Sophie to pass a "car trend test" which meant that she had to be strapped into her car seat for 90 minutes and was not allowed to have more than 2 oxygen desaturations during that time. Nevermind that we live only 20 minutes from the hospital or that she was desaturating every 2-3 minutes and bounced back up by herself...Well, she finally did it and we were cleared to go home.
As with any newborn, there is a sense of trepidation when you finally go home. "Are they really letting me take this blob home? ALONE?!?!". Not that different the second time around, actually. I remember thinking that our new altered life was now officially beginning and everything still seemed so surreal.
